Winter's Slow Cooked Apple Butter

Winter brings with it a coziness; hot oatmeal, sweaters, socks, good books, soup, and a good cup of tea. There’s also a very wintery combination: apples and cinnamon. The smell wafts through the house and you know it’s apple butter.

And so here is my ingredients for the wonderful treat, that you will surely want to enjoy this holiday season!

Winter’s Slow Cooked Apple Butter:
8 cups of apples
2 ½ teaspoons of cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
(optional: add sugar or honey to taste - if needed)

Peel and slice apples into a crock pot, cook on low for 4 hours. Stir, and mash by hand (a potato masher works good). Cook an additional 8 hours (with the lid tilted on low, to allow moisture to escape, to thicken). Add spices the last half hour of cooking. Store in the refrigerator and enjoy! I put mine on hot oatmeal, spread on toast, or even a dollop on plain yogurt.

No need for thank little merry elves, you're most welcome!
No go about your decking the halls!

The Flight of the Bumblebee

The Flight of the Bumblebee   6"x8"  watercolor on paper

A vintage-inspired illustration styled after the naturalists studies of old.
This painting is a scientific illustration and study of the bumblebee (bombus)

Featuring the species:
White-Tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lucorum),
Red Tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius)
and the Early Bumblebee (Bombus pratorum)

I am a nature lover through and through, and my affections towards naturalists is just additional proof of my being born in the wrong century.

I've always felt that bumblebees are happy little things, and I have even had the honor of petting one or two on occasion! They are indeed busy bees and pleasant in their work. Their delicate wings are so delicate and intricate that I continue to be in awe of them.

The busy bee in me certainly admires the diligent little bumblebee.

2016 Calendar: Year at a Glance

Lots of exciting things have been taking place around here! And now I am happy to introduce a new product I've been wanting to finish for ages...

A year at a glance calendar!

2016 Calendar - Year at a Glance: Books Were Once Trees   11"x14" large print

I just love how the single print holds all of the days in a year, and it will serve as a piece of art until the new year comes (or hang on to it and continue to enjoy it into the new year!)
I've listed it in the shop and it's just in time to make a perfect present at Christmas!

P.S. As I was building this, I discovered a fun little fact: twenty sixteen has 366 days due to a sneaky little leap year! I'm already planning on having a miniature party to celebrate that phenomenon, because after all, February 29th's a rare little 'fella!

I will be working on a new illustration from 10am-3pm at Renaissance & Papyrus in downtown South Haven. If you're near by, stop in and say hello, catch a glimpse of my working process, and be the first to see my new un-shared illustration!

It's a lovely store, full of lovely things, all around loveliness, and lovely ladies.
Hope to see you there!

Wearable Art

Miniature pieces of wearable art is now at your fingertips with these pendants.
I have molded some of my favorite friends into antique-style jewelry, to carry around with me near to my heart at all times.

Each pendant is made by my own hands and I take great care when crafting each of these little glass beauties.

I was so excited that I promptly took a Leah Bear necklace out for a spin yesterday afternoon.
She was received with much enthusiasm (to my own great delight!)

Just in time for holiday gift giving, stocking stuffers (or a self indulgence), I have listed these pieces in the shop!

The Rat and His River

The Rat and His River   14"x11"  gouache on paper

Ratty is perhaps my favorite Wind in the Willows character. He's sweet, sensible, down to earth and content. All he needs is his boat and the river and he considers himself well-off.

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
-Ratty of The Wind in the Willows (Kenneth Grahame)

Wind in the Willows: Mr. Toad

Mr. Toad   8"x10" gouache on paper

Once upon a time, a little girl fell in the love with the story of a rat, a mole, a badger, and a toad. I was that little girl, and the story was Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Now that I've grown up (technically), I have finally begun a project that I have been dreaming about for quite some time. A series based on the tale and its characters.

Here is the infamous Mr. Toad at the wheel of his greatest weakness, the motor car. In describing his attributes and characteristics it would be best to quote him on himself: “I'm such a clever Toad.”

Mr. Toad is the first in what will be a series of periodic installments.
I hope you will join me for the adventure!

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts   8"x10" gouache on paper

Perhaps one of my favorite scenes that I have been painting lately is this snowy setting with two unlikely friends. They could be planning a cup of something warm once they reach their destination, they may be discussing the upcoming Christmas party, or they may be having a discussion on the book my rabbit friend is carrying in her hands.

Either way, I would love to be able to listen in on their discussion and make plans with them.

An Autumnal Birthday Harvest Feast

October is hands down my favorite month in the year, and with it comes my birthday.
(How lucky am I to have been born in my favorite month?)

I am also very blessed to have a sweet family that continues to make my day so perfect year after year. My sweet Mama made me a birthday apple crisp (decorated with the dearest miniature paper woodland animals - she knows me so well!), and her famous homemade chili. We read books, had nature walks, watched a favorite old black & white film, Harvey. They got me the sweetest most thoughtful gifts. Even the weather was very generous to us. It was the perfect day.
We had an autumnal birthday harvest feast, and took some photos to remember it.

Every year I feel more and more blessed. To my brother, dad, and mom, thank you for the adventure!
