Wind in the Willows: Mr. Toad

Mr. Toad   8"x10" gouache on paper

Once upon a time, a little girl fell in the love with the story of a rat, a mole, a badger, and a toad. I was that little girl, and the story was Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Now that I've grown up (technically), I have finally begun a project that I have been dreaming about for quite some time. A series based on the tale and its characters.

Here is the infamous Mr. Toad at the wheel of his greatest weakness, the motor car. In describing his attributes and characteristics it would be best to quote him on himself: “I'm such a clever Toad.”

Mr. Toad is the first in what will be a series of periodic installments.
I hope you will join me for the adventure!

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

Cold Hands, Warm Hearts   8"x10" gouache on paper

Perhaps one of my favorite scenes that I have been painting lately is this snowy setting with two unlikely friends. They could be planning a cup of something warm once they reach their destination, they may be discussing the upcoming Christmas party, or they may be having a discussion on the book my rabbit friend is carrying in her hands.

Either way, I would love to be able to listen in on their discussion and make plans with them.

An Autumnal Birthday Harvest Feast

October is hands down my favorite month in the year, and with it comes my birthday.
(How lucky am I to have been born in my favorite month?)

I am also very blessed to have a sweet family that continues to make my day so perfect year after year. My sweet Mama made me a birthday apple crisp (decorated with the dearest miniature paper woodland animals - she knows me so well!), and her famous homemade chili. We read books, had nature walks, watched a favorite old black & white film, Harvey. They got me the sweetest most thoughtful gifts. Even the weather was very generous to us. It was the perfect day.
We had an autumnal birthday harvest feast, and took some photos to remember it.

Every year I feel more and more blessed. To my brother, dad, and mom, thank you for the adventure!

Christmas Cards: Bob Cratchit & 'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Christmas Cards have arrived back from the printers!

Each card comes with a matching envelope of the lovely kraft paper variety.
They are standard A2 size (measuring 4.25"x5.5") They are blank inside for your own personal messages.

It may not be a winter wonderland outdoors yet... but in case you're like me and can not wait to begin decking the halls, fa-la-la-ing and generally elfing about, I have made these cards & prints of these Christmas pieces now available in the shop!

This year, I've illustrated two cards for your holiday correspondences:
Firstly is the Bob Cratchit Card

..and then the 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Card

Patty Cake's Recipe for Fun

Patty Cake's Recipe for Fun   14"x11"  Watercolor on Paper

Patty Cake has her own recipe for fun. And her friends, the ingredients, pop out of the cupboards to help her and add some sweetness.

I wish this is what cooking looked like for me. I'm still checking egg cartons for derby hats.

Bob Cratchit

Bob Cratchit   6"x6"  Gouache on paper

It's no secret that I adore Charles Dickens, and have been known to recite a quote or two.
(Confession: I was smitten with him in high school, and he's been my literary-sweetheart ever since.)

So it was only a matter of time until I turned one of his characters into an animal. In Bob Cratchit's case, a songbird. It seemed to me that a feathered friend matched Bob's disposition perfectly. Cheerful. Singing. Jolly. And all around a good-natured soul.
Why, I have just described both Bob Cratchit and a robin!

Original Art Update
I have some exciting news! On October 22nd, I will be having some original work available at KRASL Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan. Please contact KRASL for inquiries about purchasing & reserving original art: info@krasl.org

I will be sharing all of the pieces shortly!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

I've been silently working away these past few weeks. Although the leaves have barely begun to change colors I have been living in an imaginary world of snow, and have been making some Christmas goodies!

Here is one of the scenes I've painted for this year's holiday illustrations...

'Twas the Night Before Christmas   11"x14"  Oil on canvas

A right jolly old elf this bear must be indeed! You can just imagine the look on this children's faces as they creep down the stairs to find Santa Bear enjoying cookies and milk. Meanwhile, a little doll house and teddy bear wait for them under the tree left by the kindly fellow. (They are happy little details that I like knowing are nestled away on the edge of the painting).

There's one more Christmas-y illustration still to come, which I'll share shortly.
Happy October my little rabbits!

Jangles' First Birthday

We had a little celebration for a big joy in our lives this past week!
Jangles, my little puppy, has grown into a loyal, well-behaved (mostly, she is chewing her ribbon below!), loving friend.

We had an out-of-doors party for her that was the essence of all things autumn-y, this is my favorite time of the whole year! Here is the evidence of the event, documented in photos.

The cake was promptly devoured before I could snap a photo, so we will have to remember it in our hearts...

Here's to many more happy returns of the day for my fluffy companion.
I love you Jangles.
